Landed cost explained: price imported products without losing money

ekomeye Team · · 1 min read

If you import from China, India or anywhere else, the supplier's unit price is not your cost. Landed cost is what one unit really costs once it is sitting in your warehouse.

The formula

Landed unit cost = (supplier price × exchange rate) + share of freight, customs and other costs.

A worked example

  • 200 T-shirts at ¥18 and 100 caps at ¥12 = ¥4,800 goods.
  • Exchange rate 16.5 → ৳79,200 goods value.
  • Air freight ৳9,500, customs ৳6,800, local transport ৳1,200 → ৳17,500 extra.

ekomeye spreads the ৳17,500 by value: the T-shirts are 75% of the goods value, so they carry 75% of the extra cost. Each T-shirt lands at about ৳362.6 instead of the ৳297 you might assume.

Weighted average cost

When the shipment arrives and you click "Mark received", ekomeye adds the stock and updates each product's cost to the weighted average of old and new stock. Your profit reports stay accurate automatically.
